Transitional Living Program (TLP) is a program designed to care for youth between
the ages of 15 and 19 who require intensive services to provide them with a safe,
caring home to allow them to heal while teaching them the skills that they will need
to live successfully in the future. Youth in this program suffer from a variety of
emotional and behavioral difficulties due to their painful pasts. Many of these
youth have experienced multiple broken placements and have not been given the
opportunity to develop the skills many of us develop through a normal, family environment.
Often, these youth will transition out of the child welfare system into living independently.
It is imperative that they are connected with people who will continue to provide guidance
to them beyond their transition to adulthood.
Youth in this program need someone who can help them with these common issues:
- Serious emotional and behavioral problems
- Legal challenges
- Substance use and abuse
- Developmental delays
- A history of multiple failed placements
- Teen parenting and pregnancy
- Significant educational challenges
- History of family disruption, neglect and/or abuse
Foster parents, who work with us to help these children, must be willing and able to:
- Create a sense of belonging for the youth placed in their home
- Give youth the stability they need so that they can begin to learn
healthy relationship development in a loving, family environment
- Remain open to caring for youth who come from various religious, socio-economic
and ethnic backgrounds
- Must be willing to model the skills necessary for the youth to successfully
transition into adulthood
- Provide transportation to visits, appointments, court, etc.
- Work with a variety of professional service providers to meet the needs of the youth in their home
Foster parents in this program will receive:
- Higher per diem for use in training youth on money management skills
- Ongoing support and education in their efforts to provide life-changing
care for youth placed in their home
- Regular foster home visitation from the case manager assigned to their home
- 2 paid respite days per month
- Mileage reimbursement for transporting youth to required appointments
- 24/7 Crisis support services
